What is Nursing ?

“Nursing is the protection, promotion, and optimization of health and abilities, prevention of illness and injury, alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response, and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, communities, and populations” - ANA’s Nursing’s Social Policy Statement.

Nurses take care of people who are healthy or sick, of all ages and from different cultural backgrounds, and who have physical, emotional, psychological, intellectual, social, and spiritual needs. The nursing profession combines physical science, social science, nursing theories, and technologies in caring for these individuals.

The objective of the nursing professionals worldwide is to ensure quality care for all, while maintaining their competencies, credentials, code of ethics, and standards, and upgrading their knowledge and education. There are a number of educational paths to becoming a nurse, which vary from country to country, and involve extensive study and training of nursing theories, practice and clinical skills.

It is estimated that by the year 2020, there will be a shortage of 800,000 nurses worldwide. With people living longer and require more healthcare, nursing will be in demand for many years to come.
Singapore is facing a similar shortage in nurses and with an increasing aging population, nurses will continue to be in big demand.

To practise as a nurse in Singapore, you have to be a RN (Registered Nurse).
The Singapore Nursing Board's (SNB) Standards for Nursing Education set out the expectations of the nursing profession with regard to the educational preparation of nurses required for registration and enrolment, and for the maintenance of post-registration professional competency.
